Stop Hiding and Get Up Close and Personal

Whilst email is a wonderful tool, for many, it’s also become a way for people to hide, keep a low profile or avoid difficult conversations.

Are you one of those people who has stopped picking up the phone to clients and now sends everything by email?

Do you send proposals by email when it would be more influential to present it in person?

Do you email colleagues who are literally a few desks away, instead of walking across the office?!

Here’s why it’s important to get up close and personal with people:

1) Human Connection

There is a level of human connection that cannot be achieved by email. We all know how different it feels when we are in the same room with someone else, face to face. Whilst the conversations may not always be easy, it’s often more effective to talk things through in person than via email.

2) Influence

When you send proposals, ideas or requests in writing, you can’t control how your words are read or interpreted. The reader hears their own voice in their head, not yours. And how you would say it in person could be very different to how it comes across on paper. This could be dramatically reducing your impact and influence.

3) Become more visible

More visibility can be a powerful thing. As Woody Allen said “80% of success is showing up.”

Maybe it’s time to go back to ‘old school’ communication – face to face.
